NEW AMERICAN HERO AWARDS LAUREATES

AKFS presents the New American Hero Award (NAHA) each year to Americans of Korean ancestry who have made a significant and noteworthy contribution to the United States and have made the Korean American community proud. Dr. Sammy Lee (California) won two Summer Olympics Gold medals for the U.S., U.S. Navy Seal James Suh (Florida) was killed in Afghanistan while rescuing fellow comrades trapped in the Mountain valley, Dr. Tom Kim (Tennessee) started the Free Clinic of America in East Tennessee and operated selflessly for 25 plus years. Immigrants from Korea and other Asian countries contribute to our nation but are seldom recognized as patriots.


Since 2005, AKFS has recognized fifteen (15) American patriots of Korean descent with the New American Hero Award. NAHA is an effective program to remind immigrants to serve the U.S., their new nation.

AKFS presents the New American Hero Award (NAHA) each year to Americans of Korean ancestry who have made a significant and noteworthy contributions to the United States and have made the immigrant community proud. Immigrants from Korea and Asian countries are well contributed ethnic group in America but seldom recognized as patriot as actual. Since 2005, has recognized thirteen (13) American patriots of Korean heritage with the NAHA. The Board of Directors of the American Korean Friendship Society (AKFS USKorea.org) honors former United States Ambassador Sung Yong Kim for 2024 New American Hero Award. The Award comes with $25,000 prize that will be presented to an American non-profit organization of the honoree's choice on March 15, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. AKFS recognize Ambassador Kim's remarkable contributions made to the United States as a senior diplomat. Ambassador Kim's patriotism and passionate services for the United States enhanced the status of all Americans immigrated from Korea and Asian countries particularly. Sung Yong Kim (김성용) is an American diplomat of Korean ancestry serve the United States as the US Special Representative for North Korea Policy since 2021, and previously from 2014 to 2016. He has also served as the acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. In 2008, Kim was appointed by President George W. Bush as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Six-party talks. He later served in the Obama and Trump administrations as the Ambassador to South Korea from 2011 to 2014 and as the Ambassador to the Philippines from 2016 to 2020. In 2020, Kim was appointed by President Donald Trump as Ambassador to Indonesia. Ambassador Kim retired November 2023 and joined Hyundai Automobile Group as senior advisor.

Tom Kim

of Knoxville, TN, who founded the Free Clinic for Working Poor and has been operating the clinic for more than twelve years;


Lieutenant Colonel John Oh,

medical doctor and U.S. Army general surgeon, for his heroic service for his country in the war fields in Afghanistan, including risking his own life to perform an emergency surgery removing an unexploded rocket propelled grenade (RPG) protruding from a wounded soldier;


Samuel “Sammy” Lee (1920 –2016),

the first Asian-American to win an Olympic Gold Medal for the United States, and the first man to back-to-back gold medals (1948 London and 1952 Helsinki) in Olympic platform diving. He practiced as a podiatrist and coached Olympics diving athletes at US Olympics Training Camps and the University of Southern California. Dr. Lee had to practice at inopportune facilities because of discriminations.


Jason Pak,

Captain, US Army retired is West Point graduate, Captain of the U.S. Army (Ret.) and an elite Ranger, was wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan and serves an inspiration for veterans and civilians alike by sharing his story; 


The late James Suh, (1977-2005)

a U.S. Navy SEAL, who was part of a resolute Naval Special Warfare team fighting the Taliban and volunteered to go on a mission to rescue his fellow SEAL members who were trapped by insurgent fire. He was part of one of sixteen troops killed when a MH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.


US. Army Colonel Young-Oak Kim (1919 – 2005),

a highly decorated U.S. Army combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War and a civic leader and humanitarian. He was a member of the U.S. 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and a combat leader in Italy and France during World War II.

Chief of Acute Care Surgery and Medical Director of the Marcus Trauma Center, is an American surgeon, medical professor at Arizona State University, and military veteran. During his 24 years in the United States Navy, Rhee served as a battlefield casualty physician in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Steve Stirling,

a Korean-born American, who is the President/CEO of the Medicine Assistant Program (MAP) International, a Christian global health organization that provides medicines, prevents disease, and promotes health in some of the world’s poorest countries. MAP International has provided more than $6 billion in medicines and health supplies to communities in need since its inception in 1954.


Daniel D. Yoo,

Major General, USMC Retired assumed command of the Marine’s elite U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). MG Yoo has also served as Director of Operations (J3), United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). He was the highest ranking Korean American US military officer.


Henry Cho

is an American comedian of Korean ancestry famous for his unique brand of clean comedy. His work can be heard nationwide at comedy clubs, SiriusXM Radio, and the Grand Ole Opry. Henry is one of most popular American comedians, entertains Americans all over the US with clean jokes over three decades.

He has also served as the acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Kim joined Hyundai Automobile Group as senior advisor as he retired in November 2023.

김유근 박사:

테네씨주 낙스빌 인근의 빈민자들을 위한 무료 의료 봉사를 1988년부터 30여년간 시행하여 지역사회와 동남부 미국 지역에서 한인들의 명망을 높였습니다.


고 쌔미리 박사:

원래 소아과 의사였다 그는 로스 안젤레스에서 인종 차별이 심했던 미국의 1930-50년도에 피나는 다이빙 훈련을 하여 미국 선수로 활약하여 1948년 (London)과 1952년 (Helsinki)에 두개의 올림픽 금메달을 획득하여 미국에 충성을 하였습니다. 인종 차별이 심했던 당시에 그는 해변의 모래사장에서, 또는 일반인들이 사용하는 수영장의 물을 바꾸기 전날 밤에만 다이빙 연습을 할수 있었지만 기권을 하지 않았습니다.


잔 오 육군 중령 군의관:

아프간 전투중 불발된 수류탄을 몸에 담고 후송된 부상 병사를 스스로 자원하여 수류탄 제거 수술을 시행 함으로서 미국민을 돌보는 모범을 보여 한인들의 위상을 높였습니다. 오중령은 월터리드 군 종합병원 외과 과장으로 재직하였습니다.



제이슨 박 육군 대위:

아프간 전투중 지뢰를 맞아 두다리를 잃으면서도 부하들을 돌보는 모범을 보였습니다. 아버지도 육군 대령으로 예편한 충성스러운 가족입니다. 현재 보잉 항공사에서 섭외 책임을 맡고 있습니다.


고 제임스 서 해군 병장:

플로리다 출신 한인이자 해군 특수전 전담 해군으로서 아프간 작전에 자원하여 전투중 산화하여 미국의 자유를 지켜 주었습니다. 샌프란시스코 참전용사 묘지에 안장 되었습니다.


고 김영옥 대령:

로스 안젤레스 출신 한인으로서 세계 제 2차 대전에 자원 참전하여 이태리와 불란서에서, 그리고 한국전쟁에서 용맹을 떨쳐 최우수 지휘관으로 모범을 보여습니다.


피터리 박사:

해군 사관학교 졸업후 군의관으로 용맹을 떨친 피터리 박사는 미국 트라우마 외과계에서 가장 우수한 실력과 모범을 보여 한인들의 위상을 높였습니다. 현재, 미국 최대의 상해쎈터인 Marcus Trauma Center최고 책임자로서 봉사하고 있습니다.


박병진 북부 죠지아 검사장:

박병진 검사장은 조지아 주 하원의원을 3선하고, 트럼프 대통령의 임명과 연방 상원의 인준을 받아서 한인 역사상 최초로 연방 법무부 검사장으로 취임 하였다. 그는, 조지아주의 가장 영향력 있는 100명 중의 하나로 인정을 받았으며, 주류사회에서 가장 성공한 인사로 인정을 받았다.


스티브 스털링 MAP 회장:

구호 의약품을 세계의 빈민들에게 공급 하는 비영리 단채 Medical Assistance Program의 대표인 Steve Stirling 씨는 한국계 입양아 출신으로 모금과 배급, 그리고 탁월한 리더쉽을 발휘 하고 있다.


대니얼 유 해병 소장:

해병대의 가장 일리트 해병들의 집합체인 특수전 사령부를 지휘하는 대니얼 해병 특수전 사령관은 많은 경험과 철저한 리더쉽으로 부대를 운용하고 있다.


헨리 조 (Henry Cho):

미국에서 건전한 스탠드업 인기 코미디언이댜. 그는 1980년대부터 전국의 여러 라디오, 텔레비죤 채널과 코메디 클럽, 영화 출연으로 있다. 칸추리 뮤직의 본산 무대인 내쉬빌 Grand Ole Opry에 정기적으로 출연하는 유일한 아시아계 미국인이다. 헨리 조는 격조 있는 만담으로 보다 많은 미국인들이 웃으며 더욱 행복하도록 기여 했으며 한인들의 높은 품격을 알리고 있다.


빅터 차:

조지타운대학교 정치학과교수이며, 전략국제문제연구소 한국석좌이다. 2004년 12월부터 2007년 5월까지 미국의 국가안전보장회의(NSC) 아시아 담당 국장이었다. 그는 대북문제 전문가로 미국 정책 수립을 도왔으며, 아시아연구기금(D. S. Song-Korea Foundation Chair in Asian Studies) 의 책임자로서 업적을 세웠다. 스탠퍼드대학교 에서 석사학위, 컬럼비아대학교에서 박사학위를 취득 하였다.


짐 용 김:

Time잡지가 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인중 한명으로 선정한바 있는 한국계 미국인 의사이며, 세계 은행 총재를 역임하였다. 그는 2009년 3월 아시아인으로는 최초로 아이비 리그의 총장에 선출되었으며, 다트머스 대학교 총장을 역임 하였다. 하바드 의과대학의 국제보건·사회의학과장, 동 대학 프랑수와 사비에 배뉴센터(FXB) 소장 및 브리검앤우먼스 병원 (하버드 메디컬 스쿨 병원)의 국제보건학과장을 역임하였다. 또한 그는 중남미 등의 빈민지역에서 결핵 퇴치를위한 의료구호활동을 전개 하였고, 세계보건기구(WHO) 에이즈국장을 역임하였다.
